Technology and Change Can Be Your Friend

Most consultants and industry leaders say that they welcome change, however if you’ve ever been involved in industry and brought about change, it is just amazing how quickly you will be attacked. Especially if the change you bring is hyper efficiency in your company and the other companies in the industry cannot compete. In fact, you will soon find that other companies will call their congressmen and senators, who will in turn call their regulatory bodies, which will come after you for fines and fees.

The reality is that people do not like change even though they say they are for it. Eventually in an industry; if you are the one to bring about change and you have success in your innovations, the industry will try to get you to share your knowledge with industry leaders and other companies. These major innovations in industry sectors occur about every 3 to 4 years in any given industry where new changes come about. And it’s very interesting to watch.

In fact, the trade journals will pick it up and write about it, others will start doing seminars, consultants will start writing books and eventually the innovation sweeps the entire industry and everyone is doing it. Even though your company thought of it, everyone else is taking credit for it because the next new thing shows that the industry is on the leading edge of technology and using state-of-the-art equipment.

For the true innovative company with the entrepreneurial spirit, it is indeed, rather hilarious to watch all this. Everyone running around with their “pants on fire,” screaming about how great they are and what wonderful innovation this is, while they all take credit for it. And when you freely give your information to them, and help them compete against, all you get or all they’ll ever give you is a plaque and an award and put your name up in lights or on the cover of some trade journal or magazine.

Rather than seek industry approval, sometimes it is better to run your own race, innovate like a banshee and take the industry by storm. If you are looking for the kudos from the industry they will use this need of your ego to fully control you and take everything that you have learned the hard way, all your hard earned research and development and give it to the rest of the industry.

Please consider the reality of technology and change and use it for your own team to win. Eventually the rest of the industry will stop attacking you and start following you and imitating you. Hopefully by that time you have created a new innovation to go to the next step and leave them all in the dust once again.

After you do this three or four times in any given industry people will see you as a visionary because they have no choice. Technology and change can be your friend, so use it to your advantage. Let the others eat your dust and copy your stride, as you pick up the pace and finish up the race as a winner.
