Success As an Entrepreneur – 7 Reasons Why You Might Do Better As Your Own Boss Than As an Employee
January 15th, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized — Small Home Business AuthorPeople who were a little, shall we say, subdued in their jobs are often tagged as not being good candidates for having their own businesses. The thinking is that they don’t understand what it takes to run a business or that their work ethic leaves something to be desired.
Well, maybe that’s wrong; maybe these people didn’t give it their all because they didn’t completely buy the way their employers ran their business.
If you were one of those dubbed as “non go-getters”, see if you recognize some of the following reasons why your jobs didn’t inspire you to do your best:
1. You did not enjoy engaging in office politics but couldn’t avoid its impact, and the company or office culture had different values than your own so your heart couldn’t be fully in it
2. A lot of your time was spent on appearances rather than substance. For example, having to make a project look good when you thought it should be abandoned, or creating an extensive presentation to impress other decision makers
3. As a subset of that, you wasted a lot of time in meetings that weren’t helpful to your work
4. Most of your energy went into managing the bureaucracy, rather than in making money or customer service.
5. You observed a lack of connection between good work and recognition, which was totally disheartening
6. You didn’t have the power to truly do your work the way it should be done. That applies to middle and upper management as well.
7. The emphasis was on short-term results to the detriment of long-term viability as well as the impact on society, the environment, and individual lives.
Does that describe you? Then you might find success at a business that is run the way you see things, when you are able to fully put your heart in it.
