Starting Over When You’re Halfway There
January 24th, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized — Small Home Business AuthorAs with any long-term relationship, a career requires a tremendous investment of time and energy. The longer a person spends in a career and the more time and effort they have invested in it, the less willing they are to move their life in another direction. Even if someone is fundamentally unhappy with their career situation and direction-perhaps even with their life in general-because of the investment, they choose to remain with the status quo. By middle age, people tend to feel that they are halfway to wherever it is they are going, and it’s harder to turn around and start over than to just continue on.
There are two fundamental problems here. First is the question of where is the career really going. Many people choose the plod along day after day without ever taking the time to sit back and analyze where they are ultimately going. Many people think of retirement in terms of the number of years required to get there, but don’t really create a vision of what retirement actually looks like. It becomes one of those things that is easier not to think about than to sit down and effectively plan for it.
The other thing that happens to many people in their careers is that they are fundamentally unhappy with what they do for a living. Very often people complete school and are more concerned about finding a job than about finding the right job. As their professional lives unfold, as commitments are made, and obligations are undertaken, it becomes harder and harder to move to a new endeavor. All of a sudden, one day the person turns around and realizes that they are well into middle age, and desperately unhappy with their job and an uncertain future. Despite these feelings however, because they now feel that they are halfway to their “golden years,” it becomes easier to do nothing.
This is an unfortunate state of affairs because the reality is that life is too short. Anyone who spends their working days in an unfulfilling or unsatisfying career is wasting precious time. Furthermore, it doesn’t have to be this way. Even in these turbulent and difficult economic times, there are a number of potential opportunities that allow seasoned professionals to seamlessly change their careers to create positive change in their lives.
