So, You Think You Want to Become an Entrepreneur?

Are you unique, an eternal optimist or just plain crazy, because this is exactly what it takes to be an entrepreneur? Your daily schedule involves long and often erratic hours of work and then more work day after day. Your social life is on hold for months on end, all in favor of a constant stream of thoughts running through your mind throughout your day reminding you of what has to be done next. Surely, that’s enough to give most people a never-ending headache.

Sleep is something you do when you get some spare time, or you can squeeze it in between eating and going to the loo, and if you’re not hyped up on an excessive amount of coffee drinking to keep you awake just that little bit longer.

What person in their right mind would contemplate living a life like this? Well actually quite a few would. Given a choice, these people would much rather be in debt than ever having to entertain the thought of returning to the grindstone and working the typical 9-5 job again. The absence of office politics and listening to the latest gossip on coffee breaks is a blessing. The home is a much more peaceful and friendly environment to work in, and besides, you get to choose your own hours of work and do what you love doing. So, what do entrepreneurs have that others don’t?

Many are individualists, who are fortunate to enjoy their own company most of the time. They’re okay working alone and enjoy not having to answer the telephone or speak to another person unless they really need to for long periods of time. They’re happy in their skin, sitting in front of a computer screen eight to ten hours every day, because it isn’t a chore, and working on a new campaign gives them a thrill. We are constantly reading about this or that millionaire who has failed at numerous attempts to make it rich before they eventually make their first six-figure income, so it must also be an innate ability to stay motivated day in and day out and remain focused on the things that matter most to them.

The desire to provide and do for others, I think, also dominates the thinking of these individualists a lot of the time. Yes, they work 40-plus hours week after week because they enjoy what they’re doing. But most importantly they give themselves goals to achieve, and these become their greatest motivation for doing what they do. They aim to succeed to provide more for their family and to be in a position to help other entrepreneurs, but first they have to reach the light at the end of a sometimes very long and dark tunnel before they finally reach their goal. These people fit a particular type of mould. They live life on their terms, and this becomes a very strong motivating factor to keep them going until eventually they succeed, and they have made it and become an entrepreneur.
