Running a Restaurant Really Requires Radical and Realistic Resources

Many people want to start their own businesses, who wouldn’t like to be self-employed? Still, it is a lot of hard work and one of the hardest of all industries to own your own business in, is the food and restaurant business. If you realize this, you know you will need help, you need financial and informational resources and if you will not listen to reason, at least let me recommend a very good book on running a restaurant, as well as another very good book to help you with other resources that you will need:

“How to Run a Successful Restaurant” by William L. Siegel. 1977.

This is quite a comprehensive little “how to book” and it should be read by every MBA student writing a business plan for a fictitious restaurant business. It should be on the shelf of every restaurant entrepreneur as well. The book is quick to point out in the very first chapter the challenges, advantages and disadvantages of owning a restaurant. It then goes into how to form the business, and fund it. Next, the author discusses how to make a menu that will sell, invite repeat customers and referrals.

The book gets into vendors, relationships, employees, equipment, promotion, advertising, marketing, management, laws, and the basics of running the ship. The formation of the company, exit strategy, accounting, building, property and lots of checklists are also included.

“The Small Business Financial Resource Guide” 1998 by MasterCard, IFA – International Franchise Association.

This little book is a great resource on assistance available from both public and private sources to help an entrepreneur or franchisee get financing for their small business. Although this book is ten-years old, I am quite confident that the latest edition would be very much worthy of your time if you are need to start a business.
