So you are at the point of ditching your nine-to-five gig and taking the plunge into the world of running your own business.
Daunting as this may seem do not let it get to you. All successful businesses have begun from the same spot. Some may have had a helping hand to get going and others not. Do Not Stress!
The prospect of owning and running your own business has many an appeal. Those benefits far outweigh any of the negatives that people, in their infinite wisdom, will try to throw in your path. You do not answer to anyone but yourself, set your own hours, theoretically of course and you can determine where, how, who and why you do the things you do. The buck stops with you!
Remember, you are not unique in your thinking. Small business accounts for the majority of jobs available on the market today and is continuously growing!
Read, Read and Read!
A lot of people have gone before you and tried to blaze their own trails. Read as many autobiographies and business books on what these successful people have done before you. They have made a lot of mistakes that you can learn from without having to make them yourself!
Get inspiration by reading about the success of others but always keep in mind that what worked for them will not necessarily work for you.
Take their success and plan your own future based on your own experiences and expertise.
Many a time I have heard of people that try to emulate their success based on the advice and stories of someone else. I have yet to see this happen!
There is no magic formula or secret to success. Hard work, perseverance, an unequivocal sense of belief in yourself – these are the things that will take you through the dark times to emerge into a successful place!
Take time to RUN YOUR BUSINESS
So you have started your business and have so much work on that you seem to be stagnating and running around continuously? Well done! You are on the right path.
Remember to take time and take a step back from the day-to-day operations of your business so that you can go back to envisage the future path of your business!
Not everyone has the luxury of having a board of directors to oversee this. You are a one man show!
Recharge Your Batteries
The same way that you must take a step back to govern your business, you must also ensure that you make time for play!
Put procedures in place and form alliances that will allow you to take time off and away from your business. The penalties for not doing so will include:
- High Blood Pressure
- Risk Of Heart Attacks
- Panic
- Stagnation Of Your Business
- Lessening In Family and Social Life.
Tactical Alliances
Just because you are a one man show does not mean that you have to be a dictator, although there will be times when you will probably have to be one!
Look around you for other small businesses with which you can form strategic alliances that will benefit both your companies.
Strategically position yourself with as many as possible when it is convenient so that everyone can grow!

There is only one way to get started and that is TO GET STARTED!
Firstly, I always recommend that a good business plan be put in place. Many a viable idea has come unstuck by not knowing exactly where it is headed!
Are you building this business to sell it in x years time? Is it a family business that you wish to grow? Do you want to eventually take the business into the public?
Whatever and wherever you want it to be – MAKE A PLAN!
Always remember that the plan can, and should be amended over time!
The next point that should be a main consideration is finance. Ensure that you have the financial backing to keep you in business. This is where a large number of small companies come unstuck.
Always play to your strengths! There are certain areas in this world that are your natural strengths! Play to them, base your plans around them – this is what makes you an expert and you will be rewarded accordingly!
So you do not have the strength in essential areas to succeed? Fret not! Find a tactical alliance! Use their strengths and they can use yours to allow growth, growth and more growth!
Always keep in mind that this YOUR DREAM and do not allow others to keep you from it!
