Entrepreneurial Ability and Managing People – Totally Separate Skill Sets

May 27th, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized — Small Home Business Author

Most seasoned entrepreneurs are really good at starting something, getting it going, but they are not too much into the managing of people to take it to the next step. Indeed, managing people is a different skill set than finding a good market niche, designing a kick-ass company, and launching it into the market place.

Perhaps you can see the challenge that most entrepreneurial folks face, compounded with the issues of the personality type especially with the subset “creative genius” entrepreneurs with hard work ethic. It often seems with them that they assume others to have the same level of work ethic, which unfortunately is not the case, and as our society moves further towards an “entitlement” type civilization, it unfortunately will most likely get worse.

Being a lousy manager of people is both a blessing and a curse for a business person, I suppose. Being a lousy manager often has more to do with the forced bureaucracy of regulations than the actual people skills of the individual manager. And now days with all the generational gaps, it can get tough, not resorting to wanting to kick someone in the butt for piss poor performance, Ha! That’s okay, you can hire people that are good at that.

If you are an entrepreneur and lack the managerial people skills to move forward, do not cry over it or beat yourself up about it. It takes one kind of mind to come up with all the creative part and another to carry out the managerial part. Most often, these two types of minds do not exist in one human. So, if this is the case, don’t worry about it, you are an entrepreneur creative type. Better than being a manager type in my humble opinion.
