An Entrepreneur’s Destiny – Don’t Let Anything Hold You Back
October 1st, 2008 Filed under: Uncategorized — Small Home Business Author- Do you have a burning desire to accomplish something big in your life?
- Do you feel that certain people are holding you back?
- Is there something that you feel you just must do but it doesn’t quite make logical sense?
- If you were to die tomorrow what would you regret not having done?
These are some serious questions requiring some serious answers. The worst thing that can happen to a person is to die without having lived. Discovering and living a purposeful life will bring you joy, satisfaction, strength and endurance. This is not to say that each day is going to be like a walk through a flower garden. No, quite the contrary. You will face many challenges on the way that will test your commitment but knowing that you’re on the right path will give you the strength to go on.
I spent years not being fully convinced of my destiny. I knew what I wanted but it was not “the responsible thing” to do. Having a family makes this more complicated because society tells you to work hard to provide for your family and to not take any risks. I worked hard at two jobs that had nothing to do with my dreams. I remained broke and depressed. But things changed when I took a risk, left my jobs and accepted a commission-only sales job and ended up making more money and having more freedom with my schedule. This was the first big step towards my dreams.
Sometimes a series of steps are required to get on the track of your destiny. Just look at the lives of many famous actors. Many of them spent their early years waiting tables or doing other odd jobs before finally getting their big break. You will probably have to sacrifice either time, money, comforts, or all of these while on the road to your dreams. Nothing worth achieving comes easily. That statement alone may scare some people.
I’m not just talking about starting a business here. No, life is much more than that. In the end, the money doesn’t really matter. It’s the lives that you touch, the people that you help along the way that really counts. For instance, I have a passion for helping and teaching impoverished children in the world. Thankfully there are already many reputable organizations that allow you to sponsor children in need. I participate with one very good organization called Compassion International. But I want to expand that even further. That’s one reason why I’ve chosen to leverage the power of the internet to give me the opportunity to travel more and easily be able to maintain communication while I’m abroad.
Not everyone, however, has a burning desire to achieve something great in life. I’ve asked random people that I’ve met if they have dreams. I’ve been astonished to meet some who just want to have a job and some extra cash to spend on fun. That’s fine. Their small economic contribution will help others make money. But this is for the person who wants to change but doesn’t know if it’s the right thing to do. Objections to your dream can come in many forms. It could be lack of money. It could be that your family tells you you’re crazy. It could be your boss rejecting your proposal for positive changes in the company you work at. Or maybe your own limited thinking is your biggest objection. I’ve faced all of them but the mind can be the most powerful opponent because it really doesn’t matter what others say or what your bank account statement shows. Your mind and what you think will ultimately determine how you respond to objections.
You may wonder it it is the right thing to do. I spent years at this stage. I had a strong feeling in my heart of who I was and what I wanted to do but I ignored it for years. The feeling never went away but only grew stronger. I felt desperate and depressed when I’d look at my life and realize that I was nowhere near where I felt I should be. Then I made a decision, took a risk, and flew out of the country on a short adventure to discover myself. I returned a new man, full of dreams and aspirations and with more energy than I had ever felt before. It was the start of a new beginning.
There is no exact manual to detail how to define your destiny. If there were one book I could recommend it would be “Wild at Heart” by John Eldredge. That book was a great inspiration to me and answered some deep questions but I encourage everyone to read as much as possible. You can never read enough. The point is I recognized I had a dream and the dream would not leave me alone. I then chose to chase the dream like a wild predator. But you do need to check yourself and make sure that your dream is within the parameters of your highest moral and good judgment. Don’t do anything that would cause you to go against your moral beliefs. That would be hypocracy.
Some people will tell you that you must have a well-defined plan to get to where you want to go. That is a good idea but should never be considered the only way. Often a person doesn’t know where all the steps will take them on their journey. This can sometimes cause procrastination because a person feels so overwhelmed with such a huge project at hand that they decide to abandon it all together. This should never be allowed but rather you must take the very first step to get things going. The following steps will then be visible as you continue on. It’s like the first explorers that discovered the west. They didn’t know what was over that mountain range or what was beyond that river. They only knew to continue west until they reached the sea. So too, you will be on a voyage of discovery in the journey of life. The reality is that you will never go anywhere if you don’t take that first step.
Here is a checklist to help you define your destiny:
- What is the one thing that you think about nearly everyday?
- Is there anything immoral about it?
- Are you doing anything to get you towards that goal?
- Are you willing to sacrifice money, time, and comforts to help get you there?
- Are you ready for potential conflicts on your course to destiny?
If you had an answer to question #1, answered “no” to question #2, and “yes” to questions 3-6 then go for it! You’re ready to get started. If not then you may need to do a little more soul searching or maybe it’s just not the right time in your life. Everyone has a season. Remember, life is a journey. It’s also a precious gift so make every day count. See you at your destination.
