A Kick in the Teeth Does Not Require a Dentist
January 23rd, 2009 Filed under: Uncategorized — Small Home Business AuthorIn this time of retrenchments and growing unemployment, you can either bleat and wring your hands in despair, or you can take positive action and turn a passion into a business.
Of course it will be tough, but it is tough being unemployed too. You will have to learn new skills and work hard, but it is not impossible. The Micro and Home Based Businesses (HBB) that do well have one thing in common – passion.
It can make it easier to decide on what type of business to start if you pick something that you are already passionate about, then that passion spills over into running the business.
Take Peter, he was unemployed, he needed to have surgery and he was over 65 years old. It did not seem likely that he would ever be employed again. He was in the finance industry but had become quite depressed and felt that he could not go back into that field.
The one thing that he found great joy in was his dogs, two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. His wife trained the dogs and they were very good at everything they were taught, especially the young dog, Cooper. Peter was passionate about his dogs. Together with his wife’s skills and creative spirit and his organised accountant type mind, they developed a business.
It was relatively easy to develop product using photos of his dogs (and cat) but it was the marketing of the business that would make it work. Peter now had the passion to develop his skills and put in the hours needed to make this a successful business.
Peter was also passionate about supporting the needy, so every product that sold had a percentage go towards a charity that looked after the welfare of ill children or unloved pets. It did not take Peter long to realise that he was tapping into a globla market by developing a website. The product he developed was purchased online from France, Canada and the USA; the business was on its way.
There are many steps to be taken to run a successful business, but without passion the business is not likely to succeed. They say that when a door slams (unemployment) it is because of the draft of opportunity (your own business). So don’t think it is the end of the world if you lose your job – this kick in the teeth could just be the beginning of a new world and it could be better than the previous one.
