Reader Question – How do I determine if there is enough demand in my area for a business idea?
May 30th, 2011 Filed under: Internet Home Businesses — Small Home Business Author
I thought I’d post this question from mmiller751 since a lot of people seem to be asking it lately:
I would like to start a home business. Not an Internet home business. This would be providing a service in my local geographical area. Everybody is telling me that first I need to determine if there is enough demand for this business. “Do some market research” they say. No one is offering me any advice on HOW to do this. So how do I find out whether the small business I want to start has enough demand in my area to be successful or not?I forgot to ask also if using Google Insights would be helpful for doing this research on determining whether there is enough demand in my local area for a particular small business.
Answer: Demand is difficult to gauge. Especially if it’s a unique product/service that isn’t currently offered in your area. If it does already exist, and you’re adding your product to the market as competition, you can observe the level of success the other company has had to determine if you will sell product. There are also market research companies that provide services to start-ups. They have means of collecting and quantifying data from the area and interpreting it in ways that you can understand. It’s not everyday that a business owner can do his/her own market research – especially small home-based businesses.
